Ultraviolet (UV) rays present in sunlight, as well as any strong light and glare can damage the eyes. Water and snow surfaces can reflect a lot of light causing poor vision. You can protect yourself by wearing the right pair of sunglasses. Too much light causes the constriction of the pupils of the eyes. If the light is still too much to bear then there is squinting and damage can be caused to the retina. Ultraviolet (UV) light may damage the retina and cornea. Damage to the eyes is often caused by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays and strong light over a period of several years. Therefore make it a habit to wear protective sun glasses whenever you are in strong light that can damage your eyes.

Cataract - a cloudiness of the lens
Pterygium - tissue growth on the white of the eye that can block vision.
Photokeratitis - temporary sunburn of the cornea.
Macular Degeneration – Ultraviolet (UV) Damage to the retina.

A good pair of sun glasses will block more than 95% of ultraviolet (UV) rays. Sun glasses should be sufficiently dark to prevent glare but they should not distort colors. Children should also wear sun glasses whenever exposed to ultraviolet rays and strong light. Polycarbonate lenses are preferred especially for children as they do not break easily.

To make your sun glasses last long follow some basic rules. Only use a soft cloth to clean the sun glasses. Always put your sun glasses in its protective casing when not in use.
