There are a lot of brokers and other stock market guys who predict the future for the stock market. They claim to know what the market will do in the next few months to several years ahead. The financial sections of some newspapers often say “top ten stocks that will double in the next few months!” I cannot even predict what the stocks will look like tomorrow!

The truth is that there will be less than one percent of companies whose stocks will double in the next year. It is virtually impossible for anybody, however smart he may be, to pick out those winning companies. The broker who is promising you such returns is simply promoting for the sake of his commission. Most investors want to know the future and will often hire financial experts, paying them money, to learn about the market trends. If there really is a trend or a factor that will influence stock prices, it has been seen that the secret will be out soon, and be known by many. The stock price will almost immediately reflect this.

If you do decide to follow the advice of one of these smart brokers or newspaper predictions, please remember to plan an exit strategy. Please note that what you have planned to do is a gamble and you should have a strategy where you do not lose more than 10% at the most. If your gamble pays off, consider yourself lucky. But if you lose, make your loss a small one!

My final advice is that don’t try to predict anything. Simply follow the market trend. A simple way to find the market trend is to look under the mutual fund index of the daily Investor Business newspaper. When the Index price is below the 200-day moving average you are in cash or bonds when it is above you own equities.
