Back Pain : Causes, Treatment, and Prevention

In the human body, the areas most vulnerable to common injury are those connected to the spine. Thus back, neck and shoulder pain are very common. According to a recent survey, back pain is one of the most common reasons for visiting a doctor.
However, most of the back problems disappear on their own in a few weeks time. If you develop a severe back pain, rest for a day or two in bed. Too much bed rest is not advised as it weakens the back muscles, so as soon as you feel fit enough get up and start moving slowly. During the initial stage of an episode of back pain, applying ice, heat treatment, may help in preventing pain spasms. Over the counter painkillers are also okay for mild pain. A visit to the chiropractor may also prove helpful and is advisable during the early stages of back pain. Certain exercises in yoga, acupuncture and special massage techniques have all been said to provide relief but their benefits for chronic back pain is unproven. But if back pain persists beyond a few weeks then a visit to the doctor is a must.

One can take steps to avoid back problems from occurring in the first place itself. For example, avoid slouching, try and make it a habit to sit upright always. Don’t sit in one position for long periods. Take a break for short walks. When lifting anything heavy, bend at the knees and not at the waist. Avoid sports that involve frequent bending and twisting. One very important preventive measure for back problems is to develop strong stomach muscles. Incorporate abdominal exercise into your daily routine. Try and do as much stretching as possible whenever you get the chance, whether at home or at work.

Try and create a back friendly environment. Choose a comfortable but firm mattress and sofa for your home. Choose a correctly designed chair. These days ergonomically designed chairs are easily available and quite popular and reasonably priced.

If your back problem is serious, your doctor may advice surgery. Be very careful! Surgery should be done only as the last resort. Moreover, it is not guaranteed to work. So do get a second opinion from a specialist.
