Symptoms of HIV / AIDS

An HIV / AIDS infected person may be symptom free from about three to ten years. A symptom free but HIV infected person can still spread the infection to others via the channels mentioned above.

A major sign of having AIDS is chronic Diarrhea accompanied with loss of weight. There may also be continuous fever and sweating. Other symptoms may also appear such as chronic cough that does not respond to treatment, enlarged lymph nodes, fungal infections (candidiasis), recurring herpes infection.

When an HIV infected person develops full blown AIDS after several years, several other diseases may begin to appear such as Tuberculosis, Meningitis, certain types of cancer (Kaposis Sarcoma).

Treatment for HIV / AIDS infection

Treatment for HIV / AIDS should be started as soon as the infection is detected. In the early days HIV / AIDS was mainly treated by the medicine zidovudine. But studies have indicated that a patient may develop a resistance to the drug rendering it ineffective, if only one drug is used. Therefore modern treatment consists of a combination of two or three medicines.

It is important for a person with HIV / AIDS to have a healthy balanced diet to help in maintaining normal health.

HIV/ AIDS infection often leads to the wasting of muscles causing them to become weak. Therefore an infected person is advised regular exercise to strengthen the muscles of the body.

Other helpful tips are to drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration, avoid alcohol because it has an adverse effect on the liver.

Prevention of HIV / AIDS

(1) Be faithful to your partner and if this is not possible then always use condoms.
(2) Before blood transfusion, the blood should be tested for HIV infection.
(3) Avoid use of drugs through injection, specially shared needles.
(4) Give appropriate treatment to a pregnant HIV infected woman to reduce chances of HIV transmission to the child.
